Why Harewos Became the Hero of My Latest Branding Project

Opening the Blank Canvas

Every designer knows that moment—staring at a blank brand board, wondering which visual elements will bring the client’s vision to life. This time, I was working on a branding refresh for a small, locally-owned café known for its minimalist aesthetic and hand-crafted menu. I wanted a typeface that would stand out but still feel intentional and clean. That’s when I stumbled upon Harewos, a bold display all caps font that promised to make a statement.

First Impressions: A Font with Personality

Harewos immediately caught my eye. It’s not your average all-caps font—it’s got edge, weight, and a slightly industrial feel that works for both print and digital. The letters are sturdy but not bulky, with sharp corners that give it a modern, almost architectural quality. It felt like the perfect fit for a brand that wanted to feel both grounded and contemporary.

Logo Design: Making the First Move

My first test was the logo. I dropped the café’s name into a mockup using Harewos and was instantly sold. The font’s bold presence gave the logo a confident, no-nonsense vibe. It didn’t need any extra embellishments—it was strong enough on its own. I adjusted the spacing slightly to give it a more open, airy feel, which helped balance the heaviness of the letterforms.

Brand Identity: Building Around the Typeface

Once the logo was set, I started building the supporting elements of the brand identity. Harewos quickly became the headline font across all brand materials—business cards, signage, packaging labels, and even the website’s hero section. It worked beautifully in both black and white and in muted color palettes, maintaining its clarity and punch.

Packaging Design: Standing Out on the Shelf

The café also sells small batches of house-made spice blends and coffee beans in retail packaging. I used Harewos for the product names on the labels, and the result was exactly what I hoped for—bold, legible, and stylish. It made the products feel premium without leaning too formal. On matte paper, the font’s sharp edges gave the packaging a tactile, artisanal feel.

Social Media & Digital Presence: Consistency Across Platforms

For the client’s Instagram templates and website headers, I used Harewos as the main header font. It looked sharp in both large banners and smaller thumbnails. On mobile, the all-caps design helped maintain readability, especially for short headlines and call-to-action buttons. The font’s uniformity made it easy to scale across different screen sizes without losing impact.

Font Pairing: Finding the Right Supporting Cast

While Harewos is a bold display font, it doesn’t work well in long-form text. So I paired it with a clean, modern sans serif for body copy and descriptions. This combination created a nice visual contrast—Harewos handled the attention-grabbing headlines while the sans serif provided a soft, readable balance. Occasionally, I used a light script font for decorative accents like quote graphics, which added a touch of warmth without clashing.

Practical Tips for Using Harewos

If you’re considering Harewos for your next project, here are a few things I learned:

Final Thoughts: A Display Font That Delivers

Harewos isn’t just another display font—it’s a versatile tool that adds presence and personality to any visual identity system. Whether it’s anchoring a logo, driving a poster design, or giving packaging a modern lift, it consistently delivers. As a designer, I appreciate how it balances boldness with clarity, and how it adapts across mediums without losing its character. If you’re looking for a display font that commands attention while staying grounded in design integrity, Harewos is definitely worth a closer look.
